Beta-Amyloid Plaques, Tau Tangles, and Drugs for Alzheimer's

Amyloid Hypothesis Has Not Led To An Alzheimer's Breakthrough

It's clear that beta amyloid plaques and tau tangles have something to do with Alzheimer's Disease. But drugs that have shown promise in removing those proteins from the brain have completely failed to make a difference in the lives of actual patients. Some researchers, including Dr. Dale Bredesen, have speculated that beta amyloid is more of a symptom or a response of Alzheimer's than it is a cause.

Alzheimer's is much more complicated than many researchers have supposed. Many factors contribute to increased risks for cognitive decline. It makes sense that it's very unlikely that a pharmaceutical magic bullet could change the brains of patients experiencing a wide variety of issues at the same time.
